
even though onate arrived in 1598, it wasn't until 1659 that the spaniards set up shop in the el paso area. they stayed on the south side of the river, and while it was named el paso del norte, it really was present day juarez. they kept trying to spread to the north side of the river for more agriculture land, but the indians just wouldn't have it. i guess the apaches finally gave in.
